Pediatric Readmission Rates Aren’t Indicator of Hospital Performance

Readmission rates of patients to the same hospital within 30 days have been used as a potential indicator of clinical failure and unnecessary expenditures; however, a recent study conducted by UCSF shows that this is not the case for common pediatric conditions. Naomi Bardach, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics and lead author of the study says, “As a national way of assessing and tracking hospital quality, pediatric readmissions and revisits, at least for specific diagnoses, are not useful to families trying to find a good hospital, nor to the hospitals trying to improve their pediatric care.” The study will be published in the September issue of Pediatrics.
